Managing People

Course Aim:

Students from a range of backgrounds, specialisations and occupations will gain a generalist understanding of the intersecting factors that impinge on the contemporary managing people responsibility. The way people are managed at work has significant implications for organisational effectiveness; hence the course links evidence based research and applied perspectives to facilitate appropriate reflective learning. Such training is crucial for all managers in organisations today because whatever their technical skill-base they will play a role in managing people. The themes of creativity, diversity, and sustainability frame the course in order to develop student understanding of current dominant trends that influence management and organisational behaviour. Styles of managing appropriate to the evolving ‘knowledge economy’ global environment are canvassed in relation to organisational behaviour (OB), human resource management (HRM) and strategic human relations management (SHRM) practices. This coverage of key managing people reference points will equip management students with crucial know-how regarding the linkages between people processes, organisational systems and environmental contexts. The course depicts management as a constantly emerging learning process which reflects the dynamic character of the managing people role. Students are encouraged to develop a contemplative approach by personally engaging with what management means to them to enhance their applied capacities.
